Hedge funds pay for positioning data — which names institutions are crowded into, which they’re exiting, and where consensus is building. Most of that insight is hiding in plain sight in SEC N-PORT filings and ETF constituent data. The hard part is turning raw holdings into a usable dataset. Here’s what a clean fund-positioning data feed looks like.
Cross-holder crowding (live sample)
Security-level positioning from SEC N-PORT + ETF constituents — how many funds/ETFs hold each name, the consensus label, and the aggregate index weight behind it. Real data:
| Ticker | Security | Crowding score | Positioning | Agg. ETF weight | Held by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVDA | NVIDIA Corporation | 6 | broad_consensus | 40.51% | ARKK,DIA,QQQ,SPY,VTI,XLK |
| AAPL | Apple Inc. | 5 | broad_consensus | 35.34% | DIA,QQQ,SPY,VTI,XLK |
| MSFT | Microsoft Corporation | 5 | broad_consensus | 25.61% | DIA,QQQ,SPY,VTI,XLK |
| AMZN | Amazon.com, Inc. | 5 | broad_consensus | 16.17% | ARKK,DIA,QQQ,SPY,VTI |
| AMD | Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. | 5 | broad_consensus | 16.17% | ARKK,QQQ,SPY,VTI,XLK |
| CSCO | Cisco Systems, Inc. | 5 | broad_consensus | 7.46% | DIA,QQQ,SPY,VTI,XLK |
| JPM | JPMorgan Chase & Co. | 4 | broad_consensus | 18.29% | DIA,SPY,VTI,XLF |
| TSLA | Tesla, Inc. | 4 | broad_consensus | 16.04% | ARKK,QQQ,SPY,VTI |

The metrics on top of raw holdings
- crowding_score — how many distinct funds / ETFs hold the name (consensus vs idiosyncratic).
- positioning_label — broad consensus · moderately held · idiosyncratic.
- etf_aggregate_weight_pct — total index weight standing behind a security.
- delta_signal — new initiation · full exit · accumulated (±Δ%) · distributed (±Δ%), computed period-over-period from prior captured snapshots (no look-ahead).
Who uses fund-positioning data
- Long/short equity — who’s accumulating or exiting your names, and how crowded a thesis already is.
- Quant / factor funds — ownership, crowding, and concentration as factor inputs.
- ETF strategists & IR teams — index weight and holder breadth behind a security.

How it’s sourced (and the fine print)
Built from SEC Form N-PORT (mutual-fund / ETF holdings) and publicly published ETF constituent data, normalized to one schema; crowding is distinct-holder count across the tracked universe and deltas are computed from consecutive captured snapshots. N-PORT public holdings post on the standard filing calendar (a positioning feed, not an intraday tape). Public-domain SEC data — not investment advice, not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. SEC.
